Marrakech: Palais Moulay Said & Spa

The Palais Moulay Said & Spa is a beautiful riad located in the center of the Medina, just a short walk from the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square, making it incredibly convenient for exploring the souks, palaces, restaurants, and other attractions on foot. Personally, the biggest highlights of this riad are its location, cleanliness, service, and traditional Moroccan atmosphere.

What immediately stood out to us was the architecture and atmosphere when you step inside. Rather than feeling like a typical modern hotel, Palais Moulay Said has the charm of a traditional Moroccan riad, with beautiful details, courtyards, and Moroccan décor. During the check-in process, the staff offers a traditional Moroccan tea and treats, which is a welcome break from the chaos of carrying your luggage along the busy pedestrian street, with random motorcycles passing fearlessly near you.

The location is definitely one of its biggest advantages. You can walk to many of Marrakech's major attractions, while still having a quiet place to return to at the end of the day. If you are taking a taxi from the airport, you can call the hotel in advance, and someone will come meet you at the end of the street to help out with your luggage. The taxi will drop you off at the end of a pedestrian street, and then you have a five-minute walk to the hotel, so I definitely recommend calling the hotel and having someone waiting for you at the taxi stop. The rooms are comfortable and clean, although I would describe them as more traditional than luxurious. If you're looking for a huge, modern hotel room with all the latest amenities, this probably isn't the place for you. But if you're choosing a riad specifically for the Moroccan experience, the traditional style is part of its appeal.

The property also offers a pool, spa, and breakfast, giving you a chance to slow down and relax between sightseeing adventures. The breakfast was outstanding, but unfortunately, our experience with some of the spa services was less impressive.

For example, after all the walking we did around Marrakech, my friends were really looking forward to treating themselves to a pedicure. When they arrived for their appointment, however, we discovered that the spa did not actually have a designated area or proper setup for pedicures. Instead, they were asked to sit on uncomfortable sunbeds in the middle of the courtyard, surrounded by other guests, while the pedicure was performed with a bucket placed next to them. We ended up laughing about the unusual experience, but it was certainly unexpected and, in my opinion, not very professional. If a property offers a specific spa service, I would expect it to have the appropriate facilities and setup to provide that service comfortably and privately.

Another disappointing experience was the cooking class. We were all really looking forward to visiting the local market with the chef, learning about Moroccan ingredients, and preparing a traditional dish. Unfortunately, the experience did not live up to our expectations. We ended up spending a significant portion of the afternoon waiting for one guest to arrive. Once everyone was finally ready, the cooking class itself still wasn't set up, so we had to wait again while the staff prepared the table and gathered everything we needed.

The market visit was also disappointing. Rather than being an informative experience where we could learn about Moroccan ingredients and how to select the best ones, the person leading the group simply walked through the busy market purchasing items without explaining what he was buying, why he chose certain ingredients, or how we could identify and select them ourselves. We essentially became a group of tourists following him through the market without much explanation or interaction. Essentially, the cooking class felt poorly organized and lacked the hands-on, educational experience we had expected. With better planning, a more knowledgeable guide, and more interaction with the guests, this could have been a really memorable experience.

Overall, the biggest selling points of Palais Moulay Said & Spa are its location, atmosphere, and authentic Moroccan character. You are right in the middle of the action, surrounded by the energy of the Medina, yet the moment you walk through the doors, it feels like you've stepped into a completely different world. I would recommend Palais Moulay Said & Spa to travelers who want to experience Marrakech from inside the Medina rather than staying at a large resort outside the city. The property itself is beautiful, the location is excellent, and the breakfast was one of the highlights of our stay.

Unfortunately, our experiences with the spa services and cooking class significantly affected our overall impression. We were excited to try the activities offered by the riad, but both experiences were poorly organized and ultimately took up a large portion of our day without providing the experiences we had expected. Had we skipped these activities and spent the day exploring Marrakech instead, I probably would have rated the riad 5/5.

Overall, I would still recommend the property for its beautiful setting and fantastic location, but I would suggest enjoying the riad itself and making other arrangements for spa treatments and cooking experiences.
