Maldives: Sun Siyam Iru Fushi

There are some destinations that look almost too beautiful to be real, and the Maldives is certainly one of them. For our two-week Maldives adventure, we decided to experience two different Sun Siyam resorts. We spent our first week at Maldives: Sun Siyam Olhuveli, conveniently located just a speedboat ride from Malé International Airport, before continuing to Sun Siyam Iru Fushi for our second week.
Getting to Iru Fushi was an experience in itself, as the resort is reached by seaplane from Malé. Taking a seaplane over the Maldives had always been on our bucket list, and it was absolutely worth it! Seeing the tiny islands, coral reefs, and endless shades of turquoise from above was unforgettable and made arriving at the resort even more special.
Our stay at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi gave us everything we had dreamed of when imagining a Maldives vacation: powdery white-sand beaches, impossibly turquoise water, lush tropical vegetation, incredible snorkeling, and that wonderful feeling of being completely removed from everyday life.
Having already spent a week at Sun Siyam Olhuveli, we were excited to discover another property within the Sun Siyam collection. Although both resorts offer that picture-perfect Maldivian experience, Iru Fushi has its own distinct personality and atmosphere, making the second half of our trip feel like an entirely new adventure.
Getting to Sun Siyam Iru Fushi
Sun Siyam Iru Fushi is located in the beautiful Noonu Atoll, farther north from Malé. Getting there becomes part of the adventure, as the journey gives you your first glimpse of the Maldives from above. And those views are spectacular and worth every single penny!
Being in a small seaplane piloted by a guy wearing flip-flops while seeing the tiny islands, coral reefs, and different shades of blue scattered across the Indian Ocean is one of those moments when it really sinks in: you've arrived in the Maldives.
First Impressions
From the moment we arrived, Iru Fushi felt like the tropical island escape we had been dreaming about. We were greeted by the staff with beautiful fresh flower leis, immediately setting the tone for a warm and memorable stay.
One of the unexpected highlights was having our own personal butler assigned to us upon arrival. He became our go-to person throughout the week, taking care of our dinner and spa reservations, answering questions about activities, and helping us navigate everything the island had to offer. It was such a thoughtful and personalized touch that made our stay feel even more special. We weren't expecting this level of service, but it was definitely an amenity we happily welcomed!
The island is lush and beautifully landscaped, surrounded by brilliant turquoise water and white-sand beaches. Despite being a substantial resort with plenty of amenities, there are still many places where you can find a quiet stretch of beach and feel like you have paradise almost entirely to yourself.
One of my favorite things about Iru Fushi was simply exploring the island. Palm-lined paths wind through tropical vegetation before suddenly opening onto another gorgeous stretch of beach or a view across the lagoon.
This isn't a resort where you need to constantly plan something. The island itself is the experience.
Our Villa
Your villa is such an important part of any Maldives vacation because, inevitably, you end up spending quite a bit of time there, and when the views are this beautiful, you’ll want to!
We really wanted the full Maldives experience of staying in an overwater villa, so we booked one with a private hot tub, and it did not disappoint. The villa had so many thoughtful touches, including glass panels in the floor where we could watch marine life swimming beneath us right from our bed, an outdoor shower, and a beautiful bathtub positioned beside a window overlooking the sea.
The room was spacious and incredibly comfortable for our family of four, but my favorite part was the privacy. Having our own terrace overlooking the turquoise water, a private hot tub, and direct access to the Indian Ocean right from our villa felt absolutely priceless. There’s something pretty incredible about waking up, walking outside, and jumping straight into the sea!
Whether you choose a beachfront villa or an overwater villa, there’s really no wrong choice in the Maldives. Waking up each morning and stepping outside to those impossibly blue views never quite starts to feel normal.
And honestly, that’s part of the magic of the Maldives.
Snorkeling & Marine Life
If you’re coming to the Maldives primarily for the ocean, you definitely won’t be disappointed. The water surrounding Iru Fushi is absolutely stunning, shifting from pale aqua to brilliant turquoise and deep blue depending on the depth and time of day. We spent so much of our stay swimming, snorkeling, walking along the beach, and simply enjoying being surrounded by the Indian Ocean. And honestly, some of the best moments required absolutely no planning at all. Grab a mask and snorkel, walk straight into the water, and start exploring. Or find a quiet spot under a palm tree and spend the afternoon doing absolutely nothing. Both are equally perfect ways to spend a day in the Maldives!
Snorkeling is always one of our favorite things to do here, and I love that you don’t necessarily have to book an excursion or dedicate an entire day to experiencing the incredible underwater world. At Iru Fushi, some of our most memorable encounters happened simply by getting into the water and exploring. We swam alongside sea turtles, spotted octopuses hiding among the reef, watched stingrays glide across the ocean floor, and even encountered sharks—lots of them! Seeing so much marine life right around the island was one of the highlights of our stay.
The contrast between what you see above and below the surface is incredible. One minute, you’re looking across a peaceful turquoise lagoon that seems to stretch forever, and the next, you’re underwater surrounded by colorful tropical fish and marine life moving through the reef. For our family, it’s often these simple adventures, the ones that require little more than a swimsuit and a snorkel, that become some of our favorite trip memories.
Perfect for Families and Couples
Although the Maldives is often marketed as the ultimate honeymoon destination, we absolutely love experiencing it as a family. And Sun Siyam Iru Fushi is especially well suited for families because there’s enough variety to keep everyone entertained, while still offering the peaceful, romantic atmosphere the Maldives is famous for.
One thing we really appreciated was how the resort created separate spaces for different types of travelers. There’s a beautiful adults-only infinity pool overlooking the ocean, perfect for couples or anyone looking for a quieter place to relax. Then, on the other side of the island, you’ll find a much more active family pool, complete with diving areas and even a zipline that sends you straight into the water. Needless to say, this was our kids’ favorite spot!
As a family, you can easily fill your days snorkeling, swimming, exploring the island, and trying different water sports and activities. At the same time, couples can create an entirely different experience filled with quiet beaches, relaxing afternoons by the adults-only pool, and plenty of romantic moments. That balance is one of the things we loved most about Iru Fushi. It doesn’t feel like you have to choose between a family-friendly resort and a romantic Maldives escape; you can experience a little bit of both.
Would We Return?
Absolutely! Iru Fushi combines the natural beauty that makes the Maldives so extraordinary with enough restaurants, activities, amenities, and experiences to make a longer stay enjoyable. But what we remember most isn't any single activity. It's waking up surrounded by the Indian Ocean. Walking barefoot along the beach. Snorkeling together in unbelievably clear water. Watching the sun disappear over the horizon. And having nowhere else we needed to be.
