Maldives: Sun Siyam Olhuveli
This was our first experience staying in the Maldives, and we got to enjoy a full week in this beautiful resort. If you’re dreaming of turquoise water, white-sand beaches, overwater villas, and those picture-perfect Maldives views, Sun Siyam Olhuveli delivers exactly the kind of tropical escape you imagine when you think of the Maldives. One of the things that stood out to us was how much the resort has to offer. Rather than feeling like you are stuck on a tiny island where you might run out of things to do after a few days, Olhuveli offers a great combination of beautiful beaches, water activities, restaurants, pools, and plenty of space to explore.
The Resort

Sun Siyam Olhuveli is located in South Malé Atoll and is accessible by speedboat from Malé, which makes the arrival relatively easy compared with resorts that require an additional domestic flight or seaplane. The setting is gorgeous! As most resorts in the Maldives are, the resort encompasses an entire island. Think of turquoise water, palm trees, long stretches of white sand, and overwater villas extending out into the lagoon. It's the kind of resort where simply walking around with a camera becomes an activity because there seems to be another beautiful view everywhere you turn.
It's also a larger resort, which gives Olhuveli a different atmosphere from some of the smaller, ultra-secluded Maldivian islands. For us, that was part of its appeal. There's more to explore and more variety, making it particularly attractive for families, couples who like to stay active, and travelers planning a longer Maldives vacation.
The Maldives Experience
Of course, the real star here is the water. The lagoon surrounding Olhuveli has those incredible shades of turquoise that you come to the Maldives hoping to see. Some days are made for doing absolutely nothing beyond swimming, walking along the beach, and enjoying the view. On others, you can take advantage of the resort's water sports and excursions.
And don't skip sunset. Watching the sky change color over the Indian Ocean is one of those simple Maldives experiences that never gets old.
Rooms & Villas
A huge part of a Maldives vacation is where you stay, and Olhuveli offers everything from beach accommodations to the iconic overwater villas. For us, it's been a long-time dream to stay in one of the overwater villas in the Maldives. There's something pretty special about waking up surrounded by the Indian Ocean and being able to step outside and have that incredible scenery right in front of you.
If you're trying to decide between a beach villa and an overwater villa, I don't necessarily think one is universally better. A beach villa gives you easy access to the sand and that tropical-island feeling, while an overwater villa delivers the classic bucket-list Maldives experience.
Our overwater villa was incredibly spacious, comfortably accommodating our family of four. It featured a private pool and direct access to the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean, making it difficult to ever want to leave! We spent countless hours enjoying our own private swimming space, snorkeling around the villas, relaxing on the balcony, and simply taking in those breathtaking Maldivian views. It was everything we had imagined an overwater villa would be—and even better in person.
Food & Dining
We chose the all-inclusive experience during our stay, which gave us a wide choice of dining options. When you're spending several days—or a week—on one island, variety becomes much more important than you might expect. There are multiple restaurants and bars around the resort, so meals don't have to feel repetitive. We particularly enjoyed being able to combine relaxed daytime meals with nicer dinners in the evening and drinks overlooking the water.
Who Is Sun Siyam Olhuveli Best For?
I think this is an especially good Maldives option for families and couples who want more than just a quiet beach and villa. If your idea of paradise is an extremely small, adults-only island where you barely see another person, you may prefer a more intimate resort. Olhuveli has more activity and energy, and you see many families in the resort.
For us, traveling with two energetic boys, having restaurants, activities, water sports, pools, and different areas to explore was the perfect fit for our family. And since the resort covers the entire island, it was safe for them to wander around on their own.
Would We Return?
Absolutely! And perhaps the best endorsement we can give Sun Siyam is that after experiencing two of their resorts ourselves, we would happily stay with the brand again.
Olhuveli gives you so many of the things people travel halfway around the world to experience in the Maldives: beautiful beaches, spectacular turquoise water, overwater villas, tropical scenery, and plenty to do, all within relatively easy reach of Malé.
For travelers looking for a Maldives resort that combines those bucket-list views with plenty of activities and a relaxed resort atmosphere, Sun Siyam Olhuveli is definitely worth considering.
A personal traveling tip: Don't fill every day with excursions. Some of our favorite Maldives memories come from the simplest moments—swimming in that unbelievable water, walking along the beach, watching the sunset, and remembering that sometimes the destination itself is the experience.
